The Palio, like the city itself, did not stand still and was developing along with it.
During our walk you will find out how the most famous horse race of Italy started, what are the Contrade of the city and how they relate to the Palio, how important the Palio is for everyone in Siena and why the whole city gathers in Piazza del Campo 2 times a year to watch passionately horses run 3 laps around the square.
During this tour you will learn about the main event of the city, the Palio races, which occur 2 times a year – July 2nd and August 16th.
In the beautiful Piazza del Campo, I will tell you the story of these races, how they started and what they are now, and then we will go to the museum of one of the 17 Contradas of the city, where we will find out what the Palio and the Condrada mean to every citizen.
In the second half of the 14th century, a young girl from Siena, the daughter of a local dyer, decides to devote herself to God.
She took her vows in the Basilica of St. Dominic.
During her short life she helped the poor and the sick without sparing herself, she convinced the Pope to return to Rome from Avignon.
